[News] Passenger Car Segment Delivers Strong Result for Hyundai

• Tenth consecutive record sales month for Hyundai in Australia +16.6% YOY 
• Hyundai finished fourth overall for May, ahead of Ford and Nissan 
• Hyundai finished second overall for May in passenger car sales ahead of Ford, Holden and Mazda 
• Hyundai ix35 continues to be the top selling small SUV YTD 
• Hyundai i20 highest selling light car <$25k for May, ahead of Mazda 2 

Hyundai Motor Company Australia has finished May with another tremendous month-end performance, securing fourth place overall in the market. For a tenth consecutive month the company has achieved a record-breaking sales result – with a ‘Best Ever’ May total of 8,027 units sold, an increase of +16.6% year-on-year, equating to an overall market share of 8.3% for the month.

In terms of total market passenger car sales Hyundai finished second - ahead of Holden, Ford, and Mazda - with a total 5,499 units sold, and 11.8% market share. 

May results were driven by a continued resilient performance by the ix35 which remains Australia’s top selling small SUV for the month and YTD. Passenger car performance saw i20 take top honours in the light car <$25k segment, supported by solid results from i30, Veloster and iLoad which all achieved second place rankings in their respective categories, while the i40 with 334 units recorded its strongest monthly sales result to date.

“May delivered a strong performance for Hyundai topping two segments, with a further four top 3 rankings,” said Damien Meredith, Director of Sales, Hyundai Motor Company Australia. “This is now our tenth consecutive month achieving Hyundai best-ever sales results, providing consistent momentum and a solid growth platform as we head into the end of the financial year.” 

Hyundai Motor Company Australia May highlights:
•Light Cars <$25k: Hyundai ranked first with combined sales of Accent (330 units) and i20 (1,282 units) totalling 1,612 vehicles sold and a combined segment share of 15% 
•Small Cars <$40k: Hyundai ranked second with combined sales of i30 (2,512 units) and Elantra (599 units) totalling 3,111 vehicles sold, and a segment share of 15.3% 
•SUV Small <$40k: ix35 ranked first with total sales of 1,770 units and a segment share of 30.4% 
•Sports Cars <$80k: Veloster ranked second in the segment posting 347 sales and a segment share of 19.3% 
•People Mover <$55k: iMax ranked third in the segment posting 92 sales and a segment share of 13.3% 
•Van/CC 2.5-3.5t: iLoad ranked second in the segment achieving 261 sales and a segment share of 19% 

Overseas Hyundai Motor America sold 68,358 units in May, an increase of, +2% allowing the organisation to achieve its ‘fastest daily-selling’ rate ever. Star performances came from Sonata selling 20,194 units, and Elantra selling 25,090 units both realising 33% growth YOY.

Globally, Hyundai Motor Company sold 402,406 units in May, an increase of +10.4% over the same period in 2012.
